In the spring of 2011, our speaker conducted a study of Texas nonprofit volunteers and employees to explore the relationship between organizational mission and burnout experiences of nonprofit workers. She will present her findings, along with specific suggestions on how to keep paid and unpaid workers engaged and productive despite stressors so prevalent in nonprofit work.
Learning Objectives
- Understand importance of incorporating organizational mission into all aspects of the design, execution, and outcomes of programs and projects.
- Identify specific ways to improve job assignments and supervision to reduce burnout of staff and volunteers.
- Realize more cohesive programs with better focus, and greater energy and satisfaction from participants.

Judy Shannon is Director of Agency Relations for the Volunteer Center of North Texas. She has an MS in Organizational Communication from TCU, where she did research on nonprofit mission and its relationship with staff and volunteer burnout.
Prior to joining the nonprofit world, Shannon was Regional Director of Training for Hyatt Hotels where she designed and delivered a wide range of training topics. She has also been a guest speaker at numerous local, regional, and national conferences for practitioners, educators and other training professionals. Several of her programs have received ‘best practice’ recognition from national associations and government organizations including: U.S. Health and Human Services, the Council of Hotel and Restaurant Trainers, the Association of Continuing Higher Education and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
